Fethiye is known by several different names throughout history. In ancient times it was named Telmossos and in Ottoman period it was called Meghri. Although there is no clear information about the foundation of the city, it is understood from the historical works and archaeological excavations that the city’s history dates back to the 5th century BC. 

Fethiye, which has world-famous bays, beaches, coasts, islands, ancient cities, Lycian rock tombs, sarcophagi, castle, theatre and natural wonders to be seen, is increasing its popularity every year and attracts local and foreign tourists. Fethiye offers a wide range of options for water sports and extreme sports.

The summers are hot and dry and the winters are mild and rainy. While the average annual temperature is 17 degrees in summer and the average temperature is 30 degrees in Fethiye, seawater temperatures go up to 28 degrees in summer and the hottest weather in Fethiye is seen in July and August. In winter, the average air temperature is 10 ° C.

How to get to Fethiye?

As it is a touristic holiday area, it is easy to reach Fethiye by plane and by buses.
There are buses from every corner of Turkey for those who want to come to Fethiye. There are bus services from Antalya bus terminal directly to Fethiye via the beach or highland road. A long but spectacular view awaits those who come to Fethiye using the Antalya coastal road.

The nearest airport for those who want to come to Fethiye by air is Dalaman Airport and there are shuttles or taxis to Fethiye from the airport. It takes approximately 45 minutes from Dalaman Airport to Fethiye.
Antalya airport is also among the other options and the journey from Antalya airport to Fethiye takes approximately 3.5 hours.
For those who want to come to Fethiye on holiday, it is recommended to book a hotel, plane and bus tickets in advance in summer.   

 

Transportation in Fethiye:

Those who stay in the centre of Fethiye can easily go to historical places, bazaars, harbour, walking parks and some beaches around Fethiye. For those who do not want to walk, there are minibuses and municipal buses in Fethiye. The minibuses start at 06:30 in the morning and serve until 20:00 in the evening, and their routes include Taşyaka, Çatalarık, Patlaş, Karagedik and Zincirli Kavak.

It is quite easy to go to the beaches and many touristic spots located far from Fethiye by minibuses departing from Fethiye. It is possible to find minibuses to all points around Fethiye from the minibus stop located behind the fire station and only Ölüdeniz minibus departs from different points.
During the summer season, sea bus services from Fethiye marina to Çalış and Şövalye Island are organized.

 

When to get to Fethiye?

Due to the fact that it is a touristic region, every day of the year the city is active, the months of April- May-October are the calm months in Fethiye. Fethiye, which started to liven towards the end of June, is quite active, especially in July and August. May and October are considered the best months for those who want to have a quiet holiday.

There are many different options for every budget for those who want to stay in Fethiye. These options include five-star all-inclusive hotels, resorts, boutique hotels, apart-hotels, rental apartments and villas, tree houses, motels and hostels. For those who want to stay in Fethiye city centre, most of the hotels are gathered around Fethiye harbour and Paspatur area. For those who want to stay outside Fethiye, Ovacik, Hisaronu, Oludeniz, Kayakoy and Calis, as well as hotels with different concept apartments and villas wait for those who want to stay. Those who are planning to go on holiday in summer are advised to book before their arrival.

What to eat in Fethiye?

As it is on the seashore, seafood stands out the most in Fethiye. Fethiye fish market where fresh fish is sold and cooked and served is among the favourite spots of fish lovers. Those who don’t like fish but want to eat meat can taste the goat, sheep and veal meat grown in Fethiye plateaus in the restaurants in Paspatur bazaar.

Among the dishes typical of Fethiye are Arapaşı dish made from meat and chicken broth, and Keskek, which consists of grinding and forging wheat and meat to the gum consistency.
As it is a tourism area, international cuisine is also served in the centre of Fethiye and its surrounding resorts.
