The Ancient City of Assos, which is built on a 236 m high volcanic hill, is 17 km away from Ayvacik district centre. Mytilene Island is direct across from the ancient city which has a magnificent view. It is not known by whom the ancient city was founded which is estimated to be founded in the 6th century BC. The ancient city, which has been home to many civilizations such as Lydia, Persia, Rome and the Ottoman Empire since its establishment, has been one of the most important trade cities of the period. The structures that can be seen in the ancient city include the ancient theatre with a capacity of 2500 people, the Temple of Athena, the Gymnasium, the rock tombs, the Necropolis, the Acropolis, the Agora, the baths and the city walls.
Visiting hours of the ancient city of Assos: From April 1st to October 31st, from 08:30 to 19:00 It can be visited between 08:30 and 17:30 between November 1st and April 14th. Museum cardholders can visit the ancient city free of charge.
