Although it is not known exactly when it was built, it was understood from the findings that although it was used for shelter and defence in ancient times, it was used as a cemetery. The 5-storey rocks, which are estimated to be 2 thousand years old, consist of many different parts. On the first two floors of the rocks, burial chambers and temples were found. On the top floor, parts of bodies were found in the gallery called the square of the dead and a female body found here is exhibited in the Karaman Museum. There are large galleries on each floor and chambers opening to these galleries and the upper floors are accessed by corridors and chimneys. The caves, which are 40 km away from the centre of Karaman, are within the boundaries of Taşkale village and transportation is provided by private vehicles.
Taskale Grain Warehouses
The granaries in the Taşkale village consist of 250 warehouses, which were completely carved into the rocks by human hands. Granaries which are craved as single or two-room warehouses are made of clayey limestones and has the ability to keep heat and moisture constant. Because of this feature, the warehouses which can store the products without spoiling for a long time served as refrigerators in ancient times. It was understood from the studies that cereal products stored here can be stored for 30 years without spoiling.
