It is estimated that the ancient city, which was located within the borders of Belkıs village, 10 km east of Nizip district, was founded by Alexander the Great in 300 BC. It is presumed to be an important trade centre in ancient times due to its location on the Euphrates River. The artefacts and mosaics from the excavations in the ancient city are exhibited in Gaziantep Mosaic Museum.
