Herakleia Ancient City
Herakleia Ancient City is located near Çamiçi village near Bafa lake. The ancient city dates back to the 7th century BC and the ancient city was used as a port city during the Hellenistic and Roman periods and was used as a sanctuary during the Byzantine period. The ancient city of Labranda, estimated to have been built in the 6th century BC, is 14 km away from Milas. Mausolus, the second king of the Kayra region, was born here and made it the capital when he became king, then moved the capital to Halicarnassus. In the archaeological excavations and the works found, it was understood that there was a war between the Carians and Persians in 497 BC and that the Carians lost this war.

Hecate has an important place in Anatolian mythology and is believed to hold the key of Hades, the master of the dead and the home of the underworld She was depicted as one-bodied and headed in the early periods and three-bodied in later periods. She was remembered as a sorcerer feared and believed to lead evil and darkness. Numerous remains and artefacts from the excavations in the area, also known as Leyne ancient city, are exhibited in the Istanbul archaeology museum, Turgut museum house, Milas and Muğla, while the one-headed, one-headed statue of Goddess Hecate is located in front of the Turgut Municipality Building.
The ruins to be seen in the ancient city include the sacred road, the monumental gate, the sacrifice and altar place, the wall surrounding the sacred area, the doric stoas and the Hecate temple. The ancient city, 50 km away from Milas, is followed by the Milas-Yatağan road.

The ancient city of Iassos is 18 km away from Milas district centre and was built on the peninsula near Lake Bafa in 3,000 BC. The Ancient City of Bargylia is located within the borders of the village of Bogazici, 25 km from the Milas centre. The ancient city of Bargylia, which means a high place in the Carian language, is believed to date back to the millennium BC. After Alexander the Great conquered Caria, he used the city as a base. The city, which was once located by the sea, has preserved its importance during the reign of Pergamon and the harbour of the city was the home of the kingdom navy and in the Christian era, the city was the centre of the bishopric. Among the ruins of the ancient city are the ruins of the defence walls, the ruins of the ancient theatre, temple areas and altars.

Located on the 12th km of the Milas-Söke motorway, the ancient city dates back to the 5th century BC. The ancient city, located on the Bodrum-Milas highway, was once known as Gereme, and is now known as Ören Gökova. Although the ancient city of Keramos, meaning pottery, had an important place in the Roman period, it lost its importance in later periods.
Among the ruins that can be seen in the ancient city today are the city walls and two important temples.
Sanctuary of Zeus Karios
The Sanctuary of Zeus Karios, located on the Hisar Hill of Milas, has survived to the present day. During the recent excavations in and around the area, the burial chamber of Hekatomnos, the first king of the Carian region, was unearthed under the temple.

The monument, which dates back to ancient times, is thought to have been built for an important person in the 2nd century AD. The monument, which was built from marble blocks, has motifs and geometric shapes that bear the characteristics of the time it was built. It consists of three parts: the burial chamber with graves, the middle floor where the religious ceremonies are held and surrounded by columns and the roof floor. The ceiling of the monument is embroidered with geometric and floral motifs and offers a great view to the visitors.

The ancient city is located within the boundaries of Eskihisar village on the Milas Yatagan highway, 8 km west of the Yatagan district of Mugla. The city was built in the 3rd century BC in the name of Stratonike, the wife of the Seleucid king Antiochus I. The structures seen in the ancient city include two different walls of the Archaic and Classical periods, 3600 meters long, gymnasium, theatre, Roman parliament building, temples built for the emperor, bath complexes, columned street, grave monuments, fountain and water structure. .Among these structures, the wall of the Assembly building contains the prices of all goods and services sold in the city in 301 AD. To go to the ancient city which is 30 km away from Milas, you need to follow the Milas-Yatağan road and enter 1 km from Eskihisar village. The ancient city is free to visit.

The ancient city of Thera which is 78 km away from Milas is also known as Okkataş Ancient City. It is located on the Milas-Ören highway, 5 km from Milas. The castle, which was built during the Byzantine period, was restored in 1974 and gained its present-day appearance. The museum, which was built in 1983, was opened in 1987. In the museum located in Hayıtlı neighbourhood in the centre of Milas, the excavations carried out in and around Milas, as well as artefacts brought from ancient cities and Bodrum are exhibited. The museum’s garden, which is located in a two-storey building, is also used as an outdoor exhibition area. Within the museum, more than 10 showcases are exhibited in the ancient excavations of golden artefacts from various periods, earthenware, ceramics, sculptures, sculpture heads and many other artefacts from various periods.
