■ Caves in Alanya

Alanya has many land and sea caves within its geographical structure and location. It is possible to witness the formation of new stalactites and stalagmites while wandering through the magical world of stalactites and stalagmites formed in tens of thousands of years in land caves that existed millions of years ago. With the decor created by the lighting inside the cave, visitors will feel themselves in a movie. For those who like to explore the caves, there are many land and sea caves in Alanya and some of these caves can be visited free of charge.

 

Damlataş Cave

Damlataş Cave was found by chance during the port construction in 1948. The cave is located in the city centre on the west coast of the historical Alanya Castle. The cave was named Damlataş (the exact translation is dripstone) because of the water drops that continued to drip from the stalactites. There is a 50-meter-long passage at the entrance of the cave and after the passage, the cave reaches a depth of 15 meters which you can descend to with stairs. The most important feature of the cave is that it has stalagmites and stalactites which are thought to have been formed in about 15.000 years.

The cave is renowned for its fascinating beauty as well as its air which is believed to cure rheumatic and asthma diseases. You can also see patients under the supervision of a doctor, sitting in the cave for a certain period of time and apply 21 days of treatment. The air of the cave does not change in summer and winter; temperature 22 degrees Celsius, humidity 95 per cent, constant pressure 760 mm. 71 per cent nitrogen, 20.5 per cent oxygen, 2.5 carbon dioxide and some radioactivity ions were detected in the air of the cave. Damlataş cave has a special place and bears the distinction of being the first cave opened in Turkey’s tourism.

Dim Cave

Opened in 1999, the cave is located within the borders of Yaylali village, 13 km east of Alanya. The cave is at an altitude of 232 m above sea level and was built on the slope of Mount Cabel-i Reis in Alanya. The cave, which is thought to be approximately 1 million years old and consists of two sections, is 410 meters long and the 360 meters section is open to visitors. The width and height along the promenades are variable and at some points, the width and height reach 10-15 meters. Dim Cave, which is larger than Damlataş Cave, is illuminated and open to visitors. There are stalagmites and stalactites in the Dim Cave, as well as a small lake at the end of the cave. The average air temperature in the cave is 18-19 degrees in summer and winter. Dim cave, which is the second biggest cave open to visit in Turkey, offers a spectacular view to the visitors due to its location.

Kadi Ini Cave

It is located in Çatak locality of Oba town of Alanya and Badem Ağacı village and also known as Çatak Cave. Kadı ini cave is 3 times bigger than Damlataş cave and there are stalagmites and stalactites in the cave. During the survey conducted in 1957, human skeletons and fossils belonging to Paleolithic and Old Bronze Age were found inside the cave. It was found that the ruins found to belong to 20 thousand years ago and it was determined that the first settlement in Alanya started in this area. The cave, which is reached after a steep but short walk after Çatak locality, has not yet been opened to tourism and the cave can be visited individually.

Hasbahçe Cave

The cave is located in the descent of Alanya’s Küçük Hasbahçe neighbourhood, 4 km from the city centre. The cave, which is larger than the Damlataş Cave, has stalagmites and stalactites. Since there is no lighting system in the cave, those who want to visit the cave are advised to take flashlights with them.

Çimeniçi Cave

The cave, which is located in the Şeyhler district of Alanya, consists of two floors. There are many interconnected chambers inside and the cave is 19 km away from the centre of Alanya and it is worth seeing with its natural beauties and historical ruins. The temperature in the cave varies between 17 and 20 degrees on average and has a lot of travertine accumulation.

Cüceler (Dwarves) Cave

Located on the Sapadere canyon road, the cave is 17 km from Alanya city centre.The view terrace at the entrance of the cave also offers great views of the valley. The cave, which is composed of six parts, is 155 meters long and fascinates those who see stalactites and stalagmites of different colours. The cave which was opened to visitors in 2012 is estimated to be 15 thousand years old.

Sea Caves

Sea caves located to the south and west of Alanya peninsula are reached by boat tour. The sea caves, which attract visitors with their beauties, geological structures and legendary events, consist of three caves: Korsanlar cave, Aşıklar cave and Phosphorus cave.

Korsanlar (Pirates) Cave

The first cave encountered while sailing to the south of the Alanya peninsula is the Pirate Cave. Due to its wide mouth, it allows the entry of marine engines. The interesting images reflected by the colourful stones appearing underwater adds a different atmosphere to the cave. It is said that this cave was used as a looted store by pirates and they hid the girls they kidnapped here. According to another rumour, it is said that the girls who were kidnapped and loots gained were brought to the castle with a secret passage leading from the cave to the castle, but this road collapsed and closed after hundreds of thousands of years.

Aşıklar (Lovers) Cave

Aşıklar Cave is located in the southwest direction of the historical peninsula. The cave is large enough for only one person to enter and it is necessary to lean in due to the low ceiling of the cave. The length of the cave is 75 meters and there is a height of about 5 meters between the entrance of the cave and the seawater.

Fosforlu (Phosphorus) Cave

The third cave in the direction of Damlataş Cave, Fosforlu Cave, has a similar appearance to the Pirates Cave, and the gate of the Cave is large enough to allow the boat to enter. It is called by this name because of its phosphorous appearance and colour. The cave has interesting natural beauties with geological value. It is very bright at night and it is possible to notice the phosphor glow of the cave during the day. Many boat tours in Alanya take short breaks in front of the cave.
