Ancient Cities of Kaş

There are many points to visit in Kaş, which is at the intersection of the Lycian Way and the Carian Way. These points include Kekova Sunken City, Simena, Xanthos Ancient City, Aperlai Ancient City, Antiphellos Ancient City.

The ancient city of Üçağız and Theimussa

Üçağız, which is 20 km away from Kaş and 33 Demre, is also home to the ancient city of Theimussa. The ruins of the ancient city of Theimussa are located in the village of Üçağız. Although there is no detailed information about the ancient city, it is understood from the inscriptions that the settlement year is dated to the 4th century BC. The ruins of the ancient city include tombs and tower remains. The bay in Üçağız village is also home to the boats that make Kekova boat tours. Those who want to come to Üçağız can first come to Kaş or Demre and come here by minibuses.

The ancient City of Simena (Kaleköy)

Kaleköy, where there is no road transport, is only reached by boat. Kale village is one of the stopping points for boat trips and blue voyagers, 40 km from Kaş. The castle, cistern and ancient tombs are historical monuments dating back to the present day in the ancient city dating back to the 4th century BC. Kaleköy castle, which is the most beautiful viewing point of Kekova and its surroundings, is also here.

There is also the smallest theatre of the Lycian cities for 300 people with 7 rows of seats carved into the natural rock. Entrance to the castle is chargeable and the museum card is valid. Xanthos Ancient City(Kaş / Kalkan)

The city of Xanthos, which also assumed the centre of the Lycian Union, is 68 km away from Fethiye, 20 km from Kalkan, 50 km from Kaş and 235 km from Antalya. It was the largest administrative centre of Lycia in ancient times. B.C. The city, which was independent until it came under the Persian rule in 545, was completely burned down about a century later. After this fire, the city was rebuilt, even in the 2nd century BC. has assumed the task of being the capital of the Lycian Union in the century. Later, the city, which was under the control of the Romans, came under Byzantine rule and remained under the Byzantine rule until the Arab raids in the 7th century. This centre, which shows the influences of Lycian traditions, Hellenistic and Roman periods, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. Museum card is valid in the city.

Those who want to go to the ancient city of Antalya direction should first come to Kınık town near Kalkan. From here it is very easy to find the ancient city by following the signs. Buses departing from Antalya bus terminal and going from Fethiye to Fethiye pass by the ancient city.   Those who come from the opposite direction should come to Kınık town via Fethiye again. The ancient city of Xanthos is also the largest ancient city of Kaş.

Aperlai Ancient City ( Kaş )

The ancient city of Aperlai is located at the beginning of a long and narrow sheep on the Sıçak peninsula between Kaş and Kekova. Aperlai, which was a small port city in ancient times, means Aprilia in Luwi language and means the River Strait. Aperlai during the Lycian Union; He is at the head of the unity were three cities and, according to some sources, four cities have “one vote”. The ancient city of Aperlai is surrounded by ramparts fortified with towers starting from the seaside and extending to the acropolis. There are three square defence towers on the northern walls.

The best-preserved Western wall has three doors, two flat and one arched. The southern wall continues perpendicular to the hill slope. Although it is largely destroyed today, there is a gate in the middle of which provides entrance to the city and has a tower on both sides. As in all Lycian port cities, the remains of two Roman baths near the port were found in Aperlai. Remains of two small Byzantine churches, one in the northwest corner of the acropolis and the other in the south-east corner, draw attention. Both churches dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries AD were built in a basilica plan and reflect the early Byzantine church architecture. There are two narrow corridors on both sides of the middle wide corridor and the semicircular apse at the end.

The necropolis of the city is located to the east of the fortress walls and there are many Lycian sarcophagi. The buildings of the quay and the remains of structures close to the quay are underwater today. Transportation to the ancient city takes place by sea from Kaş and Üçağız.

Antiphellos Ancient City ( Kaş )

Antiphellos Antique City is 10 km away from Kaş and the settlement dates back to the 4th century BC. There are Lycian sarcophagi and rock tombs around the ancient city as well as the ancient theatre which has a fascinating view of the ancient city. The most important sarcophagus is the tomb with the unknown Lycian inscription, which is unknown as King Sarcophagus.  

It is known that the ancient theatre which was unique in Anatolia was built in the 1st century BC and has a capacity of 4 thousand people. The ancient city with a magnificent view is 2 km to the village of Çukurbağ in the north of Kaş.

Those who want to go to the antique city of Antiphellos can reach the ancient city by following the signs showing that it is 2 km.

Theatre of Antiphellos Ancient City

The ancient theatre, which is one of the Lycian artefacts, still preserves its old historical texture. Visitors can watch the sunset in the evening over the ancient theatre located very close to the sea can take beautiful pictures. It is also possible to see Meis Island from the theatre. The theatre, known to have been built in the 1st century BC, has a capacity of 4,000 people. Those wishing to see the antique theatre near the marina can go on a walk in the evening or go by private car.

Patara Ancient City ( Kaş )

It is estimated that the settlement year dates back to the 8th century BC as a result of archaeological excavations of the ancient city, which is approximately 40 km to Kaş and 16 km to Kalkan and 220 km to Antalya. It is known that the ancient city was home to Lycians, Byzantines and Romans and also the capital of the Lycian Union. Patara, which is one of the six cities that have three voting rights within the Lycian Union, has always been an important centre. Historical ruins include the Byzantine Basilica, the Roman Triumphal Arch, the Mausoleum and many historical monuments.

The historic lighthouse in the ancient city is shown among the oldest lighthouses in the world. The inscription on the lighthouse indicates that two lighthouses were built in the ancient city by the Roman emperor Nero in 64-65 AD. As a result of the tsunami that has occurred over the years, one of the lanterns has been destroyed and the traces of the tsunami are still standing on the standing lantern. Entrance to the ancient city of Patara is free of charge and is free for museum cardholders. Those who want to go to the ancient city of Antalya, first of all, you can come to Kaş or Kalkan and ride the Patara dolmuş from here to the ancient city. Arrival by private vehicles 11 km after passing the shield, you can reach the ancient city by entering the Patara junction.
