Aperlai Ancient City ( Kaş )

The ancient city of Aperlai is located at the beginning of a long and narrow sheep on the Sıçak peninsula between Kaş and Kekova. Aperlai, which was a small port city in ancient times, means Aprilia in Luwi language and means the River Strait. Aperlai during the Lycian Union; He is at the head of the unity were three cities and, according to some sources, four cities have “one vote”. The ancient city of Aperlai is surrounded by ramparts fortified with towers starting from the seaside and extending to the acropolis. There are three square defence towers on the northern walls. The best-preserved Western wall has three doors, two flat and one arched. The southern wall continues perpendicular to the hill slope. Although it is largely destroyed today, there is a gate in the middle of which provides entrance to the city and has a tower on both sides. As in all Lycian port cities, the remains of two Roman baths near the port were found in Aperlai. Remains of two small Byzantine churches, one in the northwest corner of the acropolis and the other in the south-east corner, draw attention. Both churches dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries AD were built in a basilica plan and reflect the early Byzantine church architecture. There are two narrow corridors on both sides of the middle wide corridor and the semicircular apse at the end. The necropolis of the city is located to the east of the fortress walls and there are many Lycian sarcophagi. The buildings of the quay and the remains of structures close to the quay are underwater today. Transportation to the ancient city takes place by sea from Kaş and Üçağız.
