Archaeological Sites in Side

In addition to being a holiday destination, Side has been home to many different civilizations and is known for its historical buildings.The Temple of Apollo is one of them. Historical places where visitors to Side do not leave without seeing or taking a souvenir photograph include Side Ancient City, Ancient Theater, Temple of Apollo, Side Museum, Monumental Fountain and Aspendos Bridge.

Side Antique Theater

Side ancient theatre, which is estimated to be built on Roman architecture and an existing theatre, has a capacity of 15 thousand people. The theatre, which was built in the middle of the 2nd century BC, is the largest ancient theatre in the region. Since there was no hill to support the theatre, it was built with a superior architectural technique. The theatre stage consists of three parts: Cavea, Orskestra and Scene. The theatre, which was used as an arena for gladiator races and animal struggles for a period, was used as an open-air clay pier in a period .
Side Antique Theater has many same features in terms of architecture with the Coliseum. Baroque feature of the Antonine period is seen in the decorations.  
Classical music, film music and different events are organized in Side Antique Theater in summer. Side Antique theatre can be visited for a low fee.

Ancient City of Side

The ancient city of Side, which came to the forefront as one of the few cities in the world with its location and being a port city, has hosted many civilizations throughout history. Visitors to the ancient city can see different traces from different civilizations. The ancient city of Side , which resembles an open-air museum , is approximately a 15-minute walk from the city centre.

The craftsmanship in the historical monuments in the ancient city is really worth seeing. It is known that the people living here used a language-specific to this city and it is assumed that this language, which cannot be solved today, comes from the Indo-European language family. Excavations in the ancient city yielded traces of a great fire and earthquake.

Arab raids that began in the 7th century BC, as a result of the attacks and plundering of Rhodes, Venice and Genoese pirates, kings of Cyprus and the Crusades, the people of the city left the city from the 12th century and settled in Antalya.   Walking to this area, especially after sunset, is an indispensable activity for those who visit Side. The ancient city of Side can be visited free of charge.

Side Aspendos Bridge

Built on the bridge in the fourth century, this bridge was built by the Romans but destroyed by the earthquakes.It was rebuilt by the Seljuks in the 16th century and gained its present appearance.It is known that stones brought from the ancient city of Aspendos were used in the first construction of the bridge. This stone bridge, which belongs to the Seljuk architecture, is 220 meters wide and 3.5 to 6.5 meters long. The bridge was restored in 2003 and was supported by a steel infrastructure. Aspendos Bridge offers a wonderful view to its visitors and you can see it on the way to the ancient city of Aspendos.
