Gaziantep Attractions

There are many places to see in and around Gaziantep. Many of these points are easily accessible by public transport. It is recommended that those who want to visit Gaziantep spend 2 days and those who have a lot of time to spend 3 days.

Gaziantep Castle

Gaziantep castle is built on a hill in the city centre but the exact date is still unknown. The castle was used effectively in different periods. Gaziantep Defense and Heroism Panorama Museum where Turkey’s War of Independence and the stance of people and soldiers of Gaziantep against the occupation are described with pictures, models and statues, is also located in the castle.

The castle is open to visitors free of charge between 09:00 and 19:00 in summer and 08:00 to 17:00 in winter.

Bakırcılar (Coppersmith) Bazaar

Bakırcılar Bazaar, which is one the oldest bazaars in the region is located in the bazaar Şahinbey district. In the bazaar, where the best examples of copper workmanship are seen, hand-made copper articles, spices, kerchief, ornaments, hand-made carpets and rugs are sold as well as souvenirs. As a result of the renovation works, the shops in the bazaar, which have their present appearance, serve every day except Sunday.

Sahinbey War Museum

First occupied by the British and then the French, Gaziantep suffered for years and had to fight hunger, disease and oppression. The pain experienced during the occupation years and the rightful struggle of the people of Gaziantep are explained with pictures, texts and documents in the museum. Some of the artefacts of the museum are exhibited in the historical mansion and some in the cave. It is also told in the museum that the caves and tunnels under many houses in Gaziantep were used to hide and survive during the occupation years.
Located in Suyabatmaz neighbourhood, the museum is closed on Fridays and Sundays and is open to visitors between 08:00 and 17:00.

Zeugma Mosaic Museum

The Zeugma Mosaic Museum, which is the second-largest mosaic museum in the world after Hatay Archeology Museum, is one of the must-see places in Gaziantep. Opened in 2011, the museum exhibits mosaics from the ancient city of Zeugma on the shores of Birecik Dam Lake. Zeugma Mosaic Museum is one of the most important museums of the world with its magnificent architectural structure and spectacular ceramics exhibited. Entrance to the museum, which is accessible by public transport, is for a fee, and museum cardholders can visit free of charge.

The museum is open every day and the museum cardholders can visit free of charge.
Visiting hours:
From April 15th to October 2nd between 08:00 and 19:00.
From October 3rd to April 14th from 08:00 to 17:00.

Bayazhan Gaziantep City Museum

In the museum, which was built by Bayaz Ahmet Efendi in 1909, films on different subjects about the history of the city, examples of local crafts, information about peanut farming and models of the buildings that symbolize Gaziantep are exhibited.

Gorgo Medusa Glass Artefacts Museum

Museum located near the castle of Gaziantep, built as a result of the restoration of an old Antep house, bears the title of being Turkey’s first private museum of glassworks since 2008. In the museum, glass artefacts, bronze artefacts, clay artefacts, coins and jewellery from the Roman and Islamic periods are exhibited. Visitors to the museum can also watch glass shows.
The museum is located in the district of Şahinbey-Seferpaşa and is visited for a fee.

Hasan Süzer Ethnography Museum

The museum, which was opened in 1985, exhibits old items that were used by the people of Gaziantep many years ago and very few are used today. The museum, which is located in Bey Neighborhood, is open to visitors every day of the week except Mondays.

Emine Gögüş Gaziantep Museum

Emine Gögüş Museum, which is Turkey’s first museum of cuisine is 200 meters away from the Gaziantep Castle. After the maintenance and repair work, the museum was opened in 2008 and the old and new tools and equipment used in Gaziantep kitchens are exhibited. The museum is closed on Mondays and is open to visitors from 08:30 to 17:30 on other days of the week.

Yesemek Open Air Museum

Nearly 300 statues have been unearthed in the Yesemek area, which is 23 km from the centre of Islahiye.The region, which dates back to the time of the Hittites, can be visited free of charge every day.

Turkish Bath Museum

The building located in Şahinbey-Karagöz neighbourhood was built in 1577. In 2015, it was renovated by Gaziantep Municipality and converted into a museum. The museum revives the bath tradition with wax sculptures as well as the materials used in the classical Ottoman baths.

Gaziantep play and toy museum

The toy museum, which attracts visitors of all ages, was opened in 2013. In the museum, the toys used in the period from the 1700s to the present day are exhibited and the change of toys are explained. The museum, which is located in the traditional Gaziantep house in Bey neighbourhood, is open to visitors every day between 08:30 and 17:30 except Mondays.

Zincirli Covered Bazaar

The structure, also known as the black stepped bazaar, is located in the shoemakers’ bazaar in Gaziantep. There are 80 shops in the two-storey structure and the shops sell handmade products, spices, souvenirs and fabricated products belonging to the region. Zincirli Covered Bazaar is also used as a meat and vegetable marketplace.

Historical Bey Neighborhood

Bey neighbourhood, also known as the neighbourhood where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is registered to the population, is definitely recommended to be seen with its interesting architecture and stone houses. Houses built of stones called Havana or Keymıh attract visitors with their differently constructed rooms and sections. Some of the houses used as boutique hotels are also used as museums.
After the renovation works carried out in recent years, the neighbourhood of Bey has gained its present appearance.

Atatürk Memorial Museum

Gaziantep which showed an example of an incredible resistance against the French during the War of Independence, has a significance for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Having visited Gaziantep in 1933, Atatürk regularly visited Gaziantep in later periods. The people of the city later turned one of the Antep houses into an Atatürk museum.   The museum in the Bey neighbourhood contains the objects used by Atatürk during his visit to the city and the books he read. Kurtuluş Mosque

Having an interesting story, the mosque was first built as a church in 1892 and its bell was built in Brazil. The building, which was left empty in later periods, was used as a prison for a while and later it was used as a mosque. Gaziantep Botanical Garden

The purpose of the establishment of Gaziantep Botanical Garden which was opened in 2009, is to promote Turkey’s vegetation and to raise environmental awareness to its visitors consisting of mainly elementary and high school students Each plant in the botanical garden contains instructional information such as the characteristics of the plant and its homeland. The Botanic Garden which is located in the Gazi Neighborhood, Zübeyde Hanım Neighborhood is open to visitors every day.

Köklüce Canyon

Köklüce Canyon is known as the climbing, hiking and camping area in Gaziantep. There are dozens of walking and climbing routes in the Köklüce Canyon, which is frequently visited especially in the summer months.

Handcrafted Shoe

Handcrafted shoes of the Gaziantep region made of original leather are among the souvenirs purchased by the visitors. Colourful shoes, also known as Yemeni, are the result of great devotion and manual labour.
