Perre Ancient City and Rock Tombs

Perre, one of the five largest ancient cities of the Commagene kingdom, is located in the central Orenli neighbourhood of Adiyaman. In the sources, the ancient city, which is mentioned about the beauty of its water, is used as a resting place by caravans, passengers and armies. The Roman fountain mentioned in the sources is still in use today. Among the most remarkable ruins of the ancient city, which is also used as a religious centre, are rock tombs carved into the rocks.

Haydaran Rock Tombs:

17 km north of Adıyaman, Haydaran Rock Tombs within the boundaries of Taşgedik village have handshake reliefs of the sun god Helios and King Antiochus. There are sarcophagi that are believed to belong to important people in the graves spread over a very large area.

Turuş Rock Tombs:

Turuş Rock Tombs belonging to the Roman period are located 40 km away from the city centre of Adıyaman and west of the 1st km of the Adıyaman-Şanlıurfa highway. Since the graves were built by carving rocks down the ground, access to the graves was provided after 10-13 steps down. Following the archaeological excavations carried out in 1999, 25 graves were unearthed and opened to visitors. Various reliefs and figures were carved on the doors and walls of the rock tombs and there are also mythological herbal and bullhead depictions at the entrances.

Dolmen type graves:

It is estimated that the Dolmen tombs, which are within the borders of Dikilitaş village, which is 125 km away from Adıyaman national park and 33 km away from Besni district, are from the period of the stone age.The tombs made by the roofing of two big rocks resembling raft attract attention with their interesting images.

Zey Cave :

The caves near the village of Zey, 7 km from Adiyaman, are thought to have been used as settlements during the early Christian period.

Caves of Gumuskaya:

40 km southwest of the province of Adiyaman on the edge of the Göksu River in the west of the village of Gümüşkaya caves are connected to each other in the form of caves formed in the form of connected tunnels. It is estimated that the caves built in 150 BC were built like houses. The caves are accessed through a very narrow road and have balconies, partitioned rooms and wells.

PalanlıCave:

It is thought that the cave, which is located on the Adiyaman-Malatya motorway, 10 km north of Adiyaman, was built in 40.000 BC. On the walls of the cave in the valley are still noticeable deer figures.

Derik Sanctuary (Hereoon):

It is estimated that the sanctuary in Datgeli village on the way to Sincik district was built in 70 AD. The sanctuary also includes the remains of Temenos, built during the Commagene period.

Sofraz Tumulus Tombs:

The 15-meter-high tombs covered with crushed stones and debris are 45 km from Adıyaman and 15 km from Besni.

Obelisk (Sesönk):

Located 33 km southeast of Besni district, the monument on Kızıldağ was built by Mithridates the 2nd King of Commagene. The monumental tomb is surrounded by three pairs of columns at a height of 10 meters, with reliefs of men, women and lions on the columns.

Tumulus of Karadağ (Montenegro)

There is a rock tomb consisting of 2 sections in Tumulus on the outskirts of Montenegro, 5 km from Adiyaman. The Tumulus area also offers spectacular views of the city, the dam and the lake.
