Places to visit in Canakkale

 

In Canakkale having an important place in the history of the world and in Turkey, there are many points to be seen. Among these points are historical cities, areas and natural wonders, which have an important place in the process from the early ages to the present day. Aynalı Bazaar:

The bazaar, which was built in 1890, suffered great damage as a result of the bombing in the Gallipoli war. The bazaar, which was restored in 1967, is now one of the most visited places by local and foreign tourists. Small but charming, this historical bazaar sells souvenirs.

Canakkale Kordon:

Kordon with its many cafes, restaurants and tea gardens is one of the most preferred places for morning and evening walks or to sit and have a drink against the view of Gallipoli, especially in spring and summer. Canakkale Ceramic Museum:

The historical building, which was built as a bath in 1905, was transformed into a ceramic museum in 2013 with the restoration of the Çanakkale Municipality. The museum, where the change of the world- famous Çanakkale ceramics from the past to the present, is told and ceramic exhibitions and various events are organized in here. Within the museum, there is also a workshop for visitors to try the ceramic art free of charge. The museum can be visited from September 1st to March 31st between 09:00 and 17:00 and from April 1st to August 31st between 09:00 and 19:00 free of charge. Çanakkale Maritime Museum:

The museum, which is highly recommended to be visited, is very important for Ottoman and Turkish history as there are documents, photographs and art exhibitions. Nusret mine ship which plays a very important role in Çanakkale wars is definitely recommended to be seen. As an extension of this museum, flags, weapons, vehicles used in wars and necessities belonging to 16 Turkish states are exhibited in Çimenlik castle. Canakkale Archaeological Museum:

The museum dates back to 1911 and was founded to preserve the artefacts brought from the ancient cities of Çanakkale and its vicinity. The museum, which was exhibited in a restored church in 1936, was exhibited in its new building, which was opened to visitors in 1984. The museum consists of a large garden and seven intertwined halls, the Frank Calvert collection, finds from the ancient city of Troia, finds from Beşiktepe, Roman artefacts, tomb steles brought from the ancient cities of Troias and Mysia, and the 7th and 2nd centuries BC works are exhibited.

Canakkale City Museum:

It is believed that the first two floors of the building, whose construction date is not known, were built in the 1800s and the third floor was built during the Republican period. Memories of people who witnessed the Gallipoli wars and objects belonging to the Gallipoli war are exhibited in the building. The building, which is located in the small square where Çarşı Street and Fetvane Street meet, was opened to visitors on 6 March 2009 after the renovation and maintenance work.

Özay Gündoğan Museum of the Great Anafarta Village:

The museum, which was created as a result of Özay Gündoğan&#39;s individual efforts, is definitely among the museums to be seen. In addition to the materials used by the soldiers during the Çanakkale wars, the museum exhibits artefacts found on the battlefields years later.

Babakale:

Babakale, a small fishing town, takes its name from the Ottoman castle. It was built in1723-26 by Captain-i Derya Governor Mustafa Pasha and there are baths, Ulucami and fountains in the castle. Baba Kale is also famous for its handmade knives.

Ancient city of Parion

The first settlement is estimated to have started in the 5th century BC in the ancient city which is located in Kemer village of Biga district. It is known that the population of the ancient city, which came under the rule of many civilizations and kingdoms, was between 25 and 30 thousand in the brightest period. Ancient theatre, Roman villa and odeon structure were unearthed in the ancient city.

Alexandria Troas Ancient City

The ancient city of Alexandria Troas was founded in 310 BC in Ezine. Among the ruins of the ancient city to the present day are the remains of the aqueduct, the ruins of baths, theatre, palace, temples. Troy, which was a port city in ancient times, is now 1.5 km away from the sea. With the effect of being a port city, the ancient city traded salt and timber to distant points. The ancient city of Troy, which is estimated to be founded between 3000 thousand and 1200 BC, is located at the junction of the Aegean sea and Marmara sea. It is seen that Troy is a solid Bronze Age settlement with its walls of five meters in height, consisting of 9 settlements. The ancient city of Troy, which was founded in close proximity to the sea in ancient times, has remained within 6 km from the sea.

It is known that the inscription on the seal, which was found in the ancient city and estimated to be written in 1200 BC, is the first article in the Çanakkale region. It is also known as the place where the Trojan war took place in the Iliad epic, which Homer is supposed to have written. In terms of its geographical location, Troy has played an important role in establishing cultural and economic connections with the civilizations ruled here. On June 5, 1988, the ancient city of Troy, where ancient excavations continued, entered the UNESCO list and became one of the world-wide known cities. 

For those who want to go to the ancient city of Troy in the village of Tevfikiye, 30 km away from Canakkale, there are buses and minibuses from the centre of Canakkale and those who want to go by private car can reach by following Canakkale-Ezine highway.

Only the ruins remain from the ancient city. Museum cardholders can visit the ancient city for free.

Museum of Troy:

The museum, which was started to be built in 2013, was opened on 10 October 2018. The museum, built for the memory of the ancient city of Troy, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and fascinates those who see impressive reliefs. The reliefs covered many periods from the first settlement year of the ancient city to the Trojan War.
