Places to Visit in Dalyan

Dalyan is a piece of heaven on earth with its clean air, magnificent nature and the world-famous İztuzu beach. For those who come to Dalyan for short or long term holiday, the places to see in Dalyan include Iztuzu beach, Sülüngür lake, Dalyan royal tombs, Caunos Ruins and Ancient City.

Iztuzu Beach

Located 12 km from Dalyan, İztuzu Beach is about 5 km long and is one of the cleanest and tranquil beaches of Turkey. As the water of Sülüngür, Ala and İztuzu lakes meet with the sea at İztuzu beach, those who wish can swim in freshwater and those who wish can swim in seawater and if they are lucky, they can swim with sea turtles. 

During the day, those who want to cool off, swim and sunbathe visit the beach, while at night Caretta caretta turtles visit to lay their eggs. To prevent damage to turtle eggs, the beach is closed to visiting between 20:00 and 08:00 and it is forbidden to turn a light on and make noise around the beach between the specified hours.  

For those who want to go to Iztuzu beach, there are minibuses near the mosque in Dalyan square and the other option is the minibus boats departing from the pier next to the mosque. Those who want to go to Iztuzu beach with their private cars can easily reach the beach by following the 12 km road with lake view and curves. Access to the beach, shower, toilet and cabin services are free, sun loungers and umbrellas are provided for a fee.

Sülüngür Lake

Sülüngür lake, which is 5 km away from Dalyan, is among the points were green and blue meet in harmony. The lake, which is two km long, 1.5 km wide and 10 meters deep, is closed for swimming and use as it is used by the local people for fish farming.
Surrounded by reeds and lush green trees, the lake is nourished by winter rains and groundwaters, and restaurants and cafes around the lake serve visitors.
Sülüngür Lake, which has been frequently visited by photographers in recent years, has spectacular scenery for photographers, especially near the sunset.
Sülüngür Lake is accessible by private vehicles or minibuses from Dalyan.

Caunos Ruins and Ancient City

The ancient city of Caunos, located in Köyceğiz, dates back to the 4th century BC. It is known that the ancient city was first founded by the people living in Anatolia and later it was home to many civilizations. The ancient city of Kaunos, which was an important port city of the region in the ancient period, was called Kbid in the period it was founded and it was named Kaunos in the 6th century BC. The magnificent rock tombs in the ancient city were used during the Roman period and the tombs were built in the 4th century BC. Among the structures that can be seen in the ancient city of Caunos are a castle and its walls, city walls, theatre, fountain, church, temples, agora, harbour, Turkish baths, warehouses, customs buildings and cemeteries. Considering the unearthed artefacts, the size of the ancient city is quite large.

As a result of the excavations carried out in the ancient city in 1966, many coins, statues, ornaments, figurines and many other historical artefacts were uncovered and all these works are exhibited in museums in the surrounding provinces.

Those who want to go to the ancient city of Caunos can go to the ancient city by crossing the sea with a boat at the level of the King’s tombs.In this way, those who visit the ancient city can also see the King rock tombs up close. Another way is to go to the archaeologist’s house by boat and reach the ancient city by a five-minute walk. There are buffets, toilets and cafeterias in the vicinity of the ancient city, and entrance to the ancient city is free of charge for museum cardholders.

Visiting hours of the ancient city: From April 15th to October 2nd between 09:00 and 20:00. From October 3rd and April 14th between 09:00 and 17:00.

Kaunos King Tomb

Rock tombs which are the magnificent works of Caunoses are also used in promotional films of Turkey and are a symbol of Dalyan.  Although there are more than 150 tombs in and around the ancient city, the six-group rock tombs are the most important rock tombs in the ancient region of Caunos, which fascinates those who see them. It is not known for whom or how the tombs were built, but it is estimated that they were supposed to have been built for the nobles or kings to be close to God in ancient times.

Mud bath and hot springs

The thermal waters of Dalyan are 39 degrees Celsius and contain sulfur, chloride, sodium, hydrogen sulfide, fluoride and radioactive gas For those who want to go to the hot springs, which are known to be good for rheumatic diseases, there are boats departing from Dalyan pier. Please note that there is a charge for entrance to the hot springs and there is no charge for those who are participating in tours.

Gelgirme hot spring

Gelgirme hot spring in Dalyan was restored in 1990 to its present condition. Local and foreign tourists coming from Dalyan and the surrounding area through the tours enter the mud pool and have a mud bath here. The mud applied to the body is kept for 30 minutes and then cleaned by entering the shower. In this area, which is also called beauty mud, there is a small pool that produces hot water except for the mud pool.

Sultaniye Hot Spring

The other hot spring in Dalyan is Sultaniye hot spring, 4 km from Dalyan. The spa is located on the slopes of Ölemez Mountain to the west of Köyceğiz Lake. It has a very modern structure and is visited by thousands of people especially in the summer months.
