The ancient city of Nysa near Sultanhisar district was built in the 3rd century BC by Antichos Soter in the name of his wife Nysa. The ancient city of Nysa, which is one of the most important cities of the Caria region, has a population of 40,000 and is spread over a large area. Because of the river passing through the middle of the city and dividing it, Nysa is also known as a double city.
It is known that many people have been educated here in ancient times due to the library gymnasium of the city. The ruins that survived from the ancient city of Nysa include the library built in the 2nd century AD, a Roman theatre with a capacity of 10 thousand people, a gymnasium, baths, stadium, collonaded street and parliament building. Some of the artefacts found in the excavations in the ancient city are exhibited in the Aydın Archeology Museum.
The ancient city of Nysa is 33 km away from Aydın city centre and 3 km away from Sultanhisar district centre.You can get to the ancient city by using the bus to Sultanhisar, which departs from Aydın bus station. If you’d like to go with a private car you can follow the signs from Aydın.
