Magnesia ancient city

The ancient city located in Ortaklar subdistrict of Germencik district of Aydın was founded by
Magnets in 400 BC. There are many buildings and ruins in the ancient city which is surrounded
by walls. The most important building among the ruins is the temple of Leukophryne, built by
the famous architect Hermogenes. Magnesia, which was dominated by Seleucus first and then
Pergamon kingdom in the Hellenistic period, preserved its importance in the Roman period and
became a religious centre. The ancient city is located between Priene, Ephesus, Tralleis and
therefore has a very important position both strategically and commercially. Some of the
artefacts excavated in the ancient city are exhibited in the Istanbul archaeological museum.

Other buildings and ruins in the ancient city include the theatre, public toilets, Turkish bath,
gymnasium, the largest bazaar of its period with the size of 26 thousand square meters, the
stadium which can fit 25 thousand people, the market basilica, the Roman temple, the temple
of Zeus, Odeon and the transverse planned Moses Mosque belonging to 15th century. Those who want to go to the ancient city of Magnesia by private car can easily reach by Aydın-
Germencik-Ortaklar road by following the signs.

Visiting hours of the ancient city of Magnesia:
April 15, October 2, 09:00 -19:00
October 3, April 14, 08:30 to 17:30. Museum cardholders can visit this area free of charge.
