Balıklı Lake
Balıklı lake, which is the symbol of the city, is also known as the place where the prophet Abraham was thrown into the fire and the wood was converted to fish. Balıklı lake is one of the most visited spots in Şanlıurfa with its fishes that are believed to be sacred in the lake and the historical artefacts found around it.
Göbeklitepe
Göbeklitepe, which is declared as the oldest temple in the world by the archaeologists, is located within the boundaries of Örencik village, 20 m away from Şanlıurfa.Göbeklitepe contributed to the history of mankind with its history dating back to 12 thousand BC, leading to the reshaping the theories of religion and civilization. In the Göbeklitepe mound, which is also known as the zero points of history, there are architectural ruins of special areas for worship purposes, obelisks and a polished stone temple with a wild animal and plant figures. The artefacts found in the excavations in and around Göbeklitepe are exhibited in the Şanlıurfa Museum. Göbeklitepe is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is 7,000 years old than the world’ 39;s oldest temple Hypogeum, two times older than the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge in England.

The ancient city of Şuayb, located 45 km from Harran, is one of the most magnificent cities of the region with hundreds of rock tombs dating from the Roman period. Harran Kümbet houses are built with the overlapping method called Trullo and attract visitors with its interesting architecture.Harran houses, which are similar to Alberobello, Italy, are characterized by keeping people cool in summer and warm in winter. It is estimated that the oldest of the houses are 200 years old. Only a few of the protected houses can be visited as cultural houses.

It is estimated that the first settlement started in 885 BC in Halfeti, some of which was flooded by the Birecik dam. Halfeti, which is 112 km away from Şanlıurfa, has been home to many civilizations throughout history. Halfeti with its very calm structure is the 9rh Cittaslow city of Turkey since 2013 and it offers the opportunity of a 1-hour boat tour on the dam lake to its visitors. Being the oldest mosque in Şanlıurfa, Grand Mosque was built as the first temple and was used as a church in the later periods. The minaret of the mosque also serves as the city’s clock tower.

Atatürk Dam which is built under the GAP project, is Turkey’s largest dam, and the 6th the largest dam in the world.
