The ancient city of Tripolis, which is 40 km from Denizli city centre, 30 km from Laodikeia ancient city and 20 km from Hierapolis, was founded on the slopes between Yenicekent town and the Menderes River in the province of Buldan in 5500 BC during the Lydian period. Another name of the ancient city is understood from the ruins was Apollonia.
The ancient city of Tripolis, which is one of the trade and agricultural centres providing transportation to the Caria and Phrygian regions within the Lydian region, has an improved wealth and income level. Traces of Roman and Byzantine periods are seen in the buildings in the city. On the coins in the ancient city are the names of the goddess Leto, Letoia Phthia and Menderes River.
There is the ancient theatre, which is built in Roman style in the ancient city, with a capacity of 10 thousand people, bath which is located 200 meter west of the theatre and has intact outer walls, remains of the city building which is150 meters south of the bath, castle, city walls and necropolis area where the rock tombs and sarcophagi are located. The ancient city, which can be visited free of charge, can be reached by private car or by Buldan minibuses departing from Denizli bus station.
