The ancient city of Telmessos, formerly known as the City of Light, was destroyed by earthquakes and natural disasters and some of them were buried in the sea.
As a result of the information obtained during the excavations, it was found that the city was founded until 3000 BC. Among the remains of the ancient city to the present day, the most important one is the ancient theatre, which was unearthed in 1993, close to the beach. Many ruins and artefacts belonging to the ancient city of Telmessos can be seen at some points of Fethiye city centre. These ruins can be seen near the government building, near the pier and among the streets just below the rock tombs.
