Marmaris and surrounding ancient cities

Marmaris stands out not only with its bays, forests, beaches and hotels but also with its magnificent historical wealth and ancient cities. There are many ancient cities in the Marmaris region, including Pyskos, Amos, Bybassos, Kastabos, Syrna, Thyssanos, Phoenix, Kasara, Kedrai, Euthena, Amnistos and Loryma.

Physkos (Fiskos) Ancient City

Physkos, an important port city of the ancient Carian region, means Doğakenti in Carian language. It is estimated that the first settlement year of the ancient city dates back to 3000 BC. The ruins that survived from the ancient city are found on the Asar hill to the north of Marmaris. The city walls on the acropolis are among the remains that survived to the present day. Like all Carian settlements, the ancient city of Physkos is built on a high slope. The fact that the ancient city of Fiskos has its own money is accepted as an indication that the city had an important place in ancient times.

Marmaris Amos Ancient City

Amos, one of the most important ancient cities in the Marmaris region, was founded in the 2nd century BC on the Asarlık hill between Turunc town and Kumlubük bay.

From the ancient city which is built on a very large are there are a few artefacts survived today. During the excavations in 1948, many inscriptions were found in the ancient city.Among the ruins of the ancient city are the ruins of the ancient theatre, ruins of the walls, fragments of administrative structures and city walls.

The ancient city of Bybassos

The ancient city of Bybassos, estimated to be the first settlement in the 7th century BC, is located 1 km west of Hisarönü village on the Marmaris-Datça road. While the ruins of the ancient city were thought to belong to the city of Erine, it was found from the researches carried out in 1960 that the ancient city belongs to the ancient city of Bybassos. Among the ruins of the ancient city are the terrace walls, the field wall on the northern side of the city, the remains of some structures at the seaside, the warehouse buildings and the churches. In the ancient city, which was home to many civilizations, Roman pottery and pottery were also found. The port city of Bybassos, which was a port city in ancient times, is now under the fields 300 meters away from the coast. It is estimated that the ancient city was a rectangular settlement.  The ancient city is reached via Hisarönü village.

Kastabos (Castabus) Ancient City

Kastabos (Castabus) Ancient City is a city built on the Eren Mountain to the south of Hisarönü village on the Marmaris-Datça road. Transportation to the city is provided by car up to Hisarönü plain and the rest is reached by foot. Among the remains of the ancient city, which is estimated to have been the first settlement year in the 4th century BC, include the columned temple, the temple foundation, walls and the ruined theatre, whose identity is not exactly known.

Ancient City of Syrna

The ancient city of Syrna is located on the Yoncaağız hill, 2 km north-east of the village of Bayır on the Bozburun peninsula between Marmaris and Datça.Among the ruins of the ancient city, where there is no clear information about when it was founded, the city walls, building foundations, crate type tombs and grave cover stones are seen. Those who want to go to the ancient city must first come to the village of Bayır. You can reach the ancient city on foot by walking a short distance from the ancient village of Bayır.

Kasara Ancient City

The ancient city of Kasara, located between Marmaris and Datça, on the edge of the Serçe harbour of the Bozburun peninsula, means a large beautiful village in the Carian language. Since there are no archaeological excavations and researches, there is not much information about the city. There are only a few pieces of the wall among the ruins that survived from the city to the present day.

Ancient City Of Phoenix

The ancient Karian city of Phoenix is located on a small hill near the Taşlıca District. Among the ruins of the ancient city, there is a structure on the hill in a very good condition, the necropolis of the ancient city can be seen near the structure. The ruins of the ancient city, 500 meters long, include temples, city walls and pathways. Those who want to go to the city by car can reach the city after a short walk from the village of Taşlıca.

Ancient City of Kedrai

The ancient city of Kedrai on the island of Sedir was named after a tree used for shipbuilding. Among the remains of the Hellenistic and Roman periods in the ancient city are the towers and walls, agora, various building ruins, the ancient harbor, ornate sarcophagi that are thought to belong to important people, the necropolis, the ruins of the temple built for Apollo, and the ancient theater in the east of the island. The ancient city, which has a very important place due to its location on the maritime trade routes in ancient times, was built in the 6th century BC. It is known that it was founded in a hundred years. The ancient city is organized by boat tours from Marmaris. Admission to the island is chargeable and museum cardholders can enter free of charge.

Ancient City of Euthena

10 km north of Marmaris, 2 km south-east of the village of Karacasöğüt was established on a hill called the Altın Sivrisi which is 700 meters high from the sea. The ancient city of Euthena, which means abundance and abundance, can be reached via the village of Karacasöğüt. Among the ruins in the city are the walls, stone walls, necropolis, city walls, temples, rock tombs and cisterns that surround the settlement area are placed.

Amnistos Ancient City

The Ancient City of Loryma

Archaeological excavations in 1995 revealed that the ancient city was founded in the 7th century BC.Acropolis, Sarnıç, Necropolis and Apollo temples are among the ruins of the ancient city. The inscriptions revealed that the temples in the acropolis were dedicated to Zeus Atabyrios. Another structure that survived from the city is the castle which is 120 meters long and 10 meters wide. The ruins of the ancient city were collected in the area immediately at the entrance of the bay. For those who want to visit the ancient city, especially in the summer season, transportation to the ancient city is provided by sea and land. Those who want to go to the ancient city Bozukkale bay by boat after about 45 minutes walk to reach the ancient city. Those who want to go by car from Söğüt to Taşlıca can reach the ancient city on foot.

Marmaris Castle and Archeology Museum

Marmaris Castle, builtin 2000 BC, has strategic importance in ancient times since it is at a point where the transition between the sea and the Mediterranean Sea is provided. It was renewed and expanded during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. The castle, which was damaged by the bombing of the French navy in the first world war, was restored between 1989 and 1990 and turned into a museum in 1991. There are 18 rooms in total including 2 archaeology halls, an ethnography hall and four art galleries. The Archaeological Museum of Marmaris is located in the castle of Marmaris and exhibits pottery, glassware, coins and ornaments found in Knidos, Burgazada and Hisarönü ruins, as well as historical artefacts from the Ottoman period.  

Museum cardholders can enter the Marmaris Castle free of charge. Visiting Marmaris Castle and Archeology Museum; From April 15th to October 2nd between 08:00 and 19:00. From October 3rd to April 14th between 08:00 and 17:30.
