There are many ancient cities and ruins that are recommended to be seen in and around Alanya which has a long history. It is recommended that those who want to visit ancient sites and ancient cities should bring hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, water and telephone with them especially in summer months.
Alara Castle
Alara castle is approximately 40 km away from Alanya and can be reached by following the right road Alara castle is approximately 40 km away from Alanya and can be reached by following the right road from the 30th kilometre of Alanya-Antalya highway. To climb to the castle, you need to climb a steep slope and stairs after the road that ends on the banks of the Alara River. The castle was built on this point in order to ensure the safety of the road between Antalya and Alanya during the time of laeddin Keykubat and to keep active trade routes under control.
The height of the fortress varies between 200 and 500 meters and it is considered as one of the most difficult to construct among the castles built by the Seljuks with incredible determination and iscipline of the defence system. The castle, which consists of two parts as an inner and outer fortress, is entered through an entrance tunnel on the left wall which is climbed with high steps. The ruins inside the castle include the remains of the palace, the ruins of the houses where the servant’s shelter, the remains of a mosque and a bath. Today, it is thought that during the period it was in use the commercial ships easily approached the castle which was quite inland from the sea. The castle, which is reached after a difficult climb, offers a magnificent view to its visitors.
Augae settlement area (Konaklı)
The residential area, which is on the Antalya-Alanya highway and 10 km away from Alanya, is located on a plain between the two elevations by the sea. Augae, which is thought to mean the temple of the mother goddess, is thought to be related to Luwi and Hellenic languages. It is believed that it was founded during the late Roman period.
Ruins of the Cibra (Kibra)
The ruins of Kibra, located within the borders of Okurcalar, 30 km northwest of Alanya, are built on the peninsula extending towards the sea. The ruins include cisterns, grave structure and stone quarry remains. There is no precise information about the history of this ruin near the castle of Alara, but the name was found on the coins presumed to have been published here in the 1st or 2nd century BC.
